Starting a creator business is no easy feat. It requires courage, determination, and a leap of faith.

As a creator, you are constantly faced with challenges and uncertainties. It’s natural to experience moments of self-doubt along the way.

I remember when I started selling ebooks for the first time. It took me almost 6 months to publish my first ebook.

I procrastinated… not because I was lazy but because I felt like an imposter. I thought I had nothing to teach.

“Why should someone buy from me?”

“I’m not an expert on the subject”

“People will call me a scammer”

The fact is… it was just my mind playing tricks on me. My self-doubt took the front seat. Didn’t let me move ahead.

If you’re a creator you’ve probably felt the same. The fear of judgment.

Tbh it’s a part of the game. But if you want to see any kind of success as a creator you can’t let self-doubt stop you. You have to overcome it.

Here are a few pointers that helped me and will help you too.

Stop Comparing

It’s easy to compare yourself to others and feel inadequate.

You see someone creating banger content and feel you’re not good enough. Why should someone listen to you instead of them?

Why should someone buy your course when there are courses available in your niche from creators who are far more experienced than you?

Listen…

It’s not about “what you say” but it’s about “how you say it”.

Your journey is unique. Your experiences are unique. You can say almost the same things other people are saying with your own unique perspective and it’ll be valuable to thousands.

Remember… we’re all in the “reminder business.”

There’s nothing in this world that’s 100% original or unique. Your perspective and experiences make it unique.

Embrace your individuality and focus on your own journey. Celebrate your wins, no matter how small they are.

Step by step. Brick by brick. Build your empire.

Be Around Supportive People

When I shared the idea of selling ebooks online with friends… a lot of them discouraged me...

“You can’t write”.

“English isn’t even your first language”.

“You’re not an expert”.

“No one will read your book… Why should they?

”Don’t waste your time doing something you’re not good at”

...and many more discouraging statements from friends.

I cut them off a lot and stopped sharing my ideas with a few of them.

You don’t want negative energy around you. You don’t want to share your thoughts with people who have zero knowledge on the subject. They’ll bring you down.

Surround yourself with people who are on the same journey as you. If you can’t find them IRL… you’ll find them online.

Be around people who are trying to achieve what you’re trying to achieve. Follow people who you aspire to be like. Find mentors who understand what you’re trying to do and have done it themselves. Invest in courses from people who you want to be like.

Challenge Negative Thoughts

As you start progressing in your creator journey. You’ll come across hate. Hateful comments from online strangers. People hate your content. People leave negative reviews on your products.

It’s okay to feel sad for a while. But you can’t get that into your mind. Otherwise, it’ll lead you to negative thoughts about yourself.

Self-doubt often stems from negative thoughts and limiting beliefs.

Challenge negative thoughts by looking in the right direction.

Instead of focusing on people who hate your stuff, shift your focus to people who love and respect you.

Instead of focusing on two negative comments from online strangers… focus on 100’s of people who have got value out of your work.

It won’t be easy in the beginning. But if you keep going… you’ll learn to ignore the hate and negativity and keep moving towards your goals.

Act More

One of the best ways to overcome self-doubt is to take action. Most people overthink everything and never act. That builds your limiting beliefs. That leads to self-doubt.

Taking action is the only way out.

Nothing will boost your confidence like appreciation from a complete stranger. Be it a positive comment or the first sale of your product.

I still remember when I got my first sale. It was $2 for my first ebook. But it gave me the confidence to keep going. It felt amazing when a complete stranger gave me good feedback. That pushed me more in the right direction.

But… none of these can happen (Getting a first sale or getting positive feedback on your work) if you don’t start.

You have to act. Show up daily and put in the reps.

Focus on Your Strengths

One of the biggest mistakes I see creators make is they focus more on “what they’re not good at” than what they’re good at.

When you’re just starting out… it won’t help you to focus on your weaknesses. You have to focus on your strengths. Double down.

If you’re good at writing… don’t try to improve your design skills because someone else is doing it.

If you’re comfortable sharing your ideas on Instagram… don’t try to learn Twitter because there are people doing great on Twitter.

At least not in the beginning. You’ll eventually have to grow on other platforms as well… but not now. One platform at a time.

By focusing on your strengths, you boost your confidence and kill self-doubt.

TL:DR

Stop comparing your day one with someone’s day 1000. Focus on your journey.
Don’t share your ideas with people who can’t help you. Be around people who have what you want.
Don’t get obsessed about two negative comments. Focus on your fans… not haters.
Taking action is the only way out. Less thinking… more doing.
Double down on what you’re good at… not on your weaknesses.
